Climb the iconic rock of El Peñon de Ifach
If you had to choose one thing to do during your stay in Calpe, it would definitely be climbing El Peñon de Ifach to enjoy a majestic sunset. This rock is no less than 332 m high and was declared a nature reserve, “Parque Natural del Peñon de Ifach,” in 1987. In the park, you can enjoy the local flora and fauna, with around 300 different plants and 80 species of birds nesting here.
Well-maintained hiking trails allow you to easily climb the rock. At some point, you will reach a tunnel, after which the route becomes a little more adventurous. You can stop here to admire the view of Calpe or continue climbing the rocks along the steep sides of the cliffs.
Enjoy the beaches of Calpe
The beaches of Calpe are the cornerstone of its charm. They offer a perfect mix of natural beauty, relaxation, and water activities. You will find vast sandy beaches, rockier beaches with slightly rougher waters, and small hidden coves. Ultimately, everyone will benefit!
Also, because the coast of Calpe is surrounded by two rocks, it is the ideal place for water sports enthusiasts who want to try their hand at catamaran sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, or diving.
Enjoy fresh seafood and local cuisine
Calpe’s culinary scene is a delicious celebration of fresh seafood and traditional Spanish flavors. Local restaurants, ranging from cozy taverns to elegant dining establishments, offer a variety of dishes showcasing the best of Mediterranean cuisine.
You will find dishes such as paella, seafood stew, and fresh grilled fish, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients.
You can also enjoy regional specialties such as arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish broth), tapas, and fideuà (a noodle dish similar to paella).
Marvel at La Muralla Roja
A number of traveling photographers come to Calpe to discover an architectural gem: La Muralla Roja. You will quickly understand why when you see the photo below.
In the 1960s and 1980s, Ricardo Bofill designed numerous postmodern buildings along the coast of Calpe, such as La Muralla Roja, Xanadú, and El Anfiteatro.
One of its most iconic buildings is the strange La Muralla Roja apartment complex. When designing this building, Bofill drew inspiration from the Kasbah, a traditional building constructed in an oasis in Morocco, adding his own avant-garde touch.
